“When words fail, music speaks.” But what lies beneath and between the notes? When Gustav Mahler wrote his fifth symphony, thought to be inspired by his wife, he was motivated to pause composition and to finally set the songs of the poet, Friedrich Rückert, to music. When he returned to the symphony, he created a song without words, a melodic, romantic expression of unhindered emotions. Speechless will explore the connection between music and words, poetry and raw emotion. Featuring vocalises by Rachmaninoff, Previn, and Prokofiev, Mendelssohn’s piano suite, Songs Without Words, and Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, “Speechless” will craft a journey through wordless emotion and lyrical poetry.
