Cabaret Room: LEON WALLER tells “Tales from Clay Tablets and Papyrus with Songs Between” with singers: Thomas A. Peters and Flezadoza, 7:00pm, no cover

January 18, 7:00 pm-10:00 pm

Tales from Clay Tablets and Papyrus with Songs Between will include tales from ancient Babylon and Egypt with songs between each story. Leon Waller’s storytelling grew out of his past as a museum educator at the Brooklyn Museum of Art where he used stories to teach children and adults about the Museum’s art holdings. He continued this tradition at The Museum for African art and The Brooklyn Children’s Museum as well as numerous other cultural institutions. Performing alongside Leon are singers Thomas A. Peters and Friza Dosa, who are both active in the live music performance scene in New York City.

Leon Waller was born in King William County Virginia in 1949 and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975 with a B.S. Degree in Education. Waller has more than 50 years experience in museum education, starting in the early 70s at The Valentine Museum and The Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond. He later held education staff positions at The Center for African Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum for African Art, and The Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Waller has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at Parsons School of Design, The New School University, since 1993, and at New York City College of Technology since 2012. He has lectured on museum education and storytelling techniques at Royal Ontario Museum, Newark Museum, Queens Museum of Art, Georgia Museum of Art, Hudson River Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and The Studio Museum in Harlem. In 2001, Waller served as a Smithsonian Institution lecturer and storyteller for a Smithsonian sponsored Crystal Cruise Line 3-week journey up the Atlantic African coast from Cape Town to Las Palmas. He is a writer and received praise for the libretto he wrote for Stephen Cronin’s song cycle “House Songs” which won the Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize in Australia in 1991.
