In The Lesbian Songbook, singer-songwriter Matthew Brookshire interprets the songs of the Indigo Girls and more, and shares stories about his search for a queer identity in the early 90s in North Carolina, of all places. A meditation on music, memory, Melissa Etheridge, and the Methodist Church.
Matthew Brookshire is a songwriter and performer originally from North Carolina. His song “Belly Breathe” is featured in the 50th anniversary season of Sesame Street and can be heard in off-Broadway’s Sesame Street the Musical.
Matthew collaborated with choreographer Keely Garfield on the Bessie Award-nominated Twin Pines (Joyce Theater, Danspace Project) and other works. About Garfield’s WOW, where Matthew interpreted the songs of Kate Bush, The New York Times wrote: “performed live by the marvelous Mr. Brookshire on vocals and piano…The arrangements are stripped down and seductively vibrant.”
With composer Curtis Moore, Matthew wrote original music for the film Palindromes (directed by Todd Solondz), pop songs for drag icon Kevin Aviance and others, and created a musical about a woman’s obsession with Lifetime Movies, For The Love of Tiffany (book co-written with Thomas Mizer and lyrics by Amanda Green). Matthew released two albums of original music, 8 Songs and Best Friend, and an EP of Americana-pop duets with Anielle Reid, Boy Girl Banjo. He appears on a compilation from the American Folk Art Museum and on Kelli Rae Powell’s Live at Jalopy.
