Every year around his birthday, David Cale likes to do a show. This year is no exception. For one night only, prompted by, and in defiance of, the rise in homophobia, he’ll present, Darling, You’re Blooming!, a selection of stories, monologues and songs of gay men in love or other emotional situations, including Storm, about a recently retired escort looking for a serious relationship, Melody, the story of a gay actor in a TV movie dealing with the straight actor in the show who plays his lover, and Elephant about two men in love, one of whom can’t admit it.
“David Cale is an enthralling writer-monologist. Reality, fantasy and an almost clairvoyant insight into personality dissolve into one another in stories that can be as memorable as one’s own most vivid dreams.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times
“David Cale has a depth and range of expression and a life force that pours out of him like the frothing mouth of a river.” – Sara Holdren, New York Magazine
“David Cale is more than a spellbinding story teller. He is a guide to the crashing rivers inside people’s hearts, minds and souls. He gives words to previously unarticulated thoughts, feelings, gestures. He doesn’t judge. But he lays bare the deadly effects of loneliness, repression, bigotry and hate with quiet eloquence.” – Nancy Churnin, Los Angeles Times
“David Cale is in a class of his own among solo artists.” – Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle
