Susan Murphy returns to Pangea with a reprise of BECOMING FANTASTIC: ELTON IN AMERICA 1970-1975, her lovingly curated and ever-shuffling exploration of the early songs of Elton John.

When the unknown 23 year-old Elton John made his American debut at LA’s Troubadour in 1970, he turned the music world upside down and began his journey as one of rock’s most brilliant innovators. And when 5 year-old Susan Murphy first heard him on the radio in 1972, it blew her little mind. Thus began her most passionate love affair with the music and artistry of the one we have come to call Captain Fantastic.

A show 50 years in the making, BECOMING FANTASTIC is Murphy’s very personal celebration of both the classics and the deep tracks, from hymn-based rock to glitter pop, all presented in intimate arrangements with her longtime musical collaborators Seth Saltzman, Nate Bloom, Rich Acciavati, and Ned Stroh.

Susan Murphy is a New York-based performer and writer who has been seen on theatre and music stages for the past 3 decades. Downtown icon Nicky Paraiso calls her “America’s Sweetheart of Song for the New Century.” He says, “Susan Murphy sings like an angel and breaks your heart like the girl who lives next door…that girl you’ve had a crush on ever since you can remember. She brings you back to the first love songs you heard on the radio by the Beatles, the Stones, or Petula Clark.” She insists, “This is not really a tribute show. It’s what happens when songs I heard decades ago have continued to live inside me, to stir and simmer there, and then they come tumbling back out in ways that sometimes surprise even me. It’s about what has made me an artist.”
