This non-narrative, multidisciplinary work draws influence from paintings and albums to create a collaborative portrait of aloneness in an ever-shifting world. You Don’t Know the Lonely One uses monologues, poems, stories and songs to explore what it means to be alone.

David Cale is a monologist, playwright, songwriter and actor. His most recent work is his solo musical memoir WE’RE ONLY ALIVE FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME at The Public Theater, for which he wrote the book, lyrics, co-composed the music with Matthew Dean Marsh and starred, and was the recipient of a 2020 Outer Critics Circle Award, a 2020 Lucille Lortel Award nomination, a 2020 Drama Desk Award nomination and a 2020 Obie Award.

Dael Orlandersmith is a playwright /poet /performer. She was a Pulitzer finalist for the play Yellowman in 2002 as well as a Drama Desk Nominee. In 2022, she had two plays open at Milwaukee Rep: Antonio’s Song/I Was Dreaming of a Son and New Age, which is currently running. She will be going to Berlin in April and in June Spoleto to her show Until the Flood about the Michael Brown shooting last year. Ms. Orlandersmith won a Doris Duke award.
